RobotsMali: Education in Mali with Local Language Learning

RobotsMali, a government-backed initiative, has taken strides to revolutionize education in Mali by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to create learning materials in local languages. Since the military government's decision to remove French as the national language in 2023, the initiative has become increasingly vital in filling the educational void left by this transition.

The initiative, spearheaded by co-founders Michael Leventhal and Seydou Katikon, has leveraged cutting-edge technologies such as ChatGPT, Google Translate, and Playground to develop a diverse array of educational resources tailored to Mali's linguistic diversity. With a focus on Mali's most widely spoken language, Bambara, RobotsMali has produced over 100 storybooks, rich in local culture and imagery, within a remarkably short timeframe.

"I hope RobotsMali will be reinforced and become the center of AI utilization for improving teaching in our national languages," expressed Assétou Founé Samake, former Malian minister of higher education and research, emphasizing the significance of preserving linguistic and cultural heritage.

However, the transition away from French has sparked concerns among students about potential limitations on global opportunities. Abdoulaye Nimaga, a ninth-grade student, expressed apprehension, stating, "If you base yourself on just Bambara, when you go somewhere else, you won’t be able to understand anything."

Nevertheless, proponents of the initiative argue that teaching in native languages enhances comprehension and engagement, particularly in regions afflicted by violence and instability. Alou Dembele, an engineer and teacher involved in the initiative, underscored the importance of nurturing local languages to foster a brighter future for Mali.

"We have a bright future if we promote our languages. This is sure. I don’t have any doubt," Dembele affirmed, highlighting the pivotal role of education in addressing societal challenges.

RobotsMali's efforts extend beyond linguistic preservation; they embody a broader commitment to equitable access to education and technology. By empowering educators and students alike, the initiative serves as a beacon of hope for Mali's educational landscape, paving the way for a more inclusive and empowered generation.

As the world witnesses a burgeoning movement towards AI-driven language preservation and education initiatives, RobotsMali stands as a testament to the transformative potential of technology in shaping the future of learning.
